Sustainability: Circular flat roof waterproofing

//The construction industry is facing significant sustainability challenges, increasingly turning towards circular construction using recyclable materials according to the Cradle-to-Cradle principle. CARLISLE® CM Europe's HERTALAN® EASY COVER waterproofing system, recently awarded the prestigious Dutch "Rethink Awards 2023" in the "Renewable Resources" category, addresses these challenges head-on.

Aware of our corporate responsibility towards the environment and society, we at CARLISLE® CM Europe have delved into producing and utilizing rubber and plastics in a manner that minimizes the environmental and climate impacts from production, processing, and disposal. Our contemporary solution, the circular HERTALAN® EASY COVER system, merges elastomeric EPDM waterproofing sheets with a penetration-free mechanical attachment via induction welding.

High Performance Material Meets Innovative Mech Fixing Method

Due to its permanently elastic behaviour combined with high resistance to ageing, the synthetic rubber EPDM was classified as a particularly sustainable material decades ago by the environmental protection organisation Greenpeace. The independent testing institute Süddeutsches Kunststoff-Zentrum (SKZ) also certifies that the material has a service life of over 50 years.

We go one step further with the HERTALAN® EASY COVER waterproofing system. Here, we work with large-format membranes up to a size of 1,000 m², which are prefabricated in the factory to fit the roof perfectly.

On site, the membranes are installed by induction welding without penetration. This system can even be applied directly to existing PVC waterproofing without the need for a time-consuming and costly removal and disposal.

Specially coated metal plate fasteners are installed before laying the EPDM membrane onto the roof. Our lightweight magnetic induction device is used to create a quick and secure bond. The process requires no hot works and reduces program length, labor costs, and resource requirements for the project

Circular Sustainability

A further advantage: reverse induction allows the membrane to be detached from the retaining plates at a later date without damage and to be reused. Only the retaining plates need to be replaced for a new installation. This dismantling option is ideal, for example, if a roof extension is planned at a later date. At the end of its life cycle, the homogeneous material of the HERTALAN® EASY COVER sheets can be recycled by devulcanising the EPDM and returning it to the production cycle.

Innovative Waterproofing Solution

The circular HERTALAN® waterproofing system has been awarded the Cradle to CradleTM Bronze certificate with silver stripe by the Cradle to Cradle Product Innovations Institute. In addition, this system was honoured with the prestigious Dutch sustainability award "Rethink Awards 2023" in the category "Renewable Raw Materials" as an exceptionally innovative solution that fits perfectly with the circular economy approach. Examples of how CARLISLE® has already considered circularity as an integral part of its product development. True to our mission statement "Let's build a better tomorrow!“
