CARLISLE® Construction Materials (CM) Europe Group, Europe's leading EPDM specialist, was awarded the prestigious Dutch sustainability prize "Rethink Award 2023" in the category "Renewable Raw Materials" on 20 September 2023. The expert jury awarded the manufacturer's circular HERTALAN® EASY COVER (FR) waterproofing system, as an exceptionally innovative solution that fits perfectly with the circular economy approach.

What makes the HERTALAN® EASY COVER system stand out?

Here, high-performance material meets a pioneering fastening method. CARLISLE® Induction System mechanically fixes the HERTALAN® EASY COVER EPDM waterproofing membranes without penetration. This not only allows direct renovation on old PVC roofs without dismantling and disposal but also deconstruction in case of roof extension at a later stage. The EPDM membrane can then be reused and at the end of their service life, they can be recycled and returned to the production cycle.

The Rethink Awards jury was impressed with the circularity approach the new standard in mechanical fixing using electromagnetic induction welding: "It demonstrates a forward-looking view of a future in which raw materials are becoming increasingly scarce. From linear to circular."

The Rethink Awards - Sustainability Reimagined

The Rethink Awards aim to raise awareness of the many innovations in the rubber and plastics industry beyond the industry itself. An independent panel of experts carefully evaluates all entries according to the five Re's of the Rethink programme: Renew (raw materials), Reduce (production and product), Redesign (design and use), Re-Use (reuse) and Recycle (collection and recycling). The prestigious award is presented every two years to promote the circular economy and recognise industry achievements in sustainability.

Circular Sustainability

When installing EPDM membranes, using heat induction technology has multiple benefits. Apart from being a faster and more efficient process that requires less labour, it also helps achieve sustainability goals.

The HERTALAN EPDM roofing system is already known for its sustainability credentials, with a 50+ year service life and a BBA-certified 25-year lifespan. The material is free of VOCs and plasticisers, it is 100% recyclable, resistant to UV, ozone and other atmospheric influences, root resistant, lightweight, and permanently flexible.

The CARLISLE Induction system is a mechanical fixing method that helps achieve uniformity and consistency while reducing the risk of damage to the HERTALAN EPDM material. Moreover, this method enables the membrane to be disengaged from each fixing using the same induction technique without any damage. This means that the HERTALAN EPDM membrane can be removed from the fixings in a usable condition and re-used or recycled, thus contributing to a circular approach to sustainability.
