Admittedly, EPDM is not a new material in the true sense of the word. However, it fulfils the criteria of undiscovered properties and uses in new applications. Nevertheless, it is still underutilized and yet to achieve its full potential in the UK's construction practices and techniques.

As an all-around versatile material, it's yet to catch the designer's imagination. EPDM already protects buildings and landscapes in all climate zones worldwide and easily performs any other waterproofing material in terms of quality, durability and sustainability.

What makes EPDM unique?

We surveyed decision-makers in the construction industry about EPDM. Two key points emerged:

1. Many people have only heard of EPDM for roof and building waterproofing applications. However, there is a gap between knowing about it and considering it for use. Decision-makers often have preconceived notions about the material. For instance, EPDM is sometimes confused with traditional plastic waterproofing membranes. Its specific advantages, such as permanently elastic behaviour combined with very high resistance to weathering and ageing, are often not recognised.

2. In addition, many decision-makers assume that synthetic rubber is complicated to lay and therefore only suitable for limited installers. Accordingly, many then resort to classic bituminous products. However, as soon as the material is used and applied for the first time, the picture changes: EPDM has to be experienced to discover its true versatility, strength and flexibility, which offers architects security, creative freedom and design inspiration.
