Overview

Located adjacent to Heart of Midlothian’s football ground in Edinburgh, the McLeod Street student residence combines refurbishment of the B-listed former Tynecastle High School buildings, designed by renowned Scottish architect John Alexander Carfrae, with newbuild blocks, providing en-suite rooms for 420 University of Edinburgh students. The development features blue roof areas and rooftop solar PV, both dependent on the waterproofing performance of the RESITRIX® EPDM single ply membrane from CARLISLE®, installed by Site Roofing.

The Project

RESITRIX®, the hybrid EPDM waterproofing membrane from CARLISLE® with a durable bituminous layer provided an ideal solution for both the blue roof areas, and the warm roofs with solar PV.

The blue roof areas provide approximately 3000m3 of rainwater attenuation, with temporary and permanent retention volumes. EPDM has now been certified to provide a service life in excess of 70 years by SKZ, ensuring that RESITRIX® met the project’s need for high performance waterproofing and robust load bearing for an extended service life. Requiring no hot works, the self-adhesive RESITRIX® membrane also offers excellent root resistance and contains no harmful plasticisers that could jeopardise the planting.

The roof build-up included the CARLISLE® Alutrix 600 vapour barrier membrane, which was installed directly onto the substrate, providing protection from water vapour ingress along with an air-tight layer for additional thermal performance. The fully-bonded RESITRIX® SK W EPDM self-adhesive single ply membrane was installed directly onto the insulation layer prior to the blue roof layer and planting.

The same roof build-up was installed for the roof areas with solar PV panels. The solar PV was installed as ballasted infrastructure to avoid any need to use fixings that penetrate the RESITRIX® membrane. In addition to providing an effective waterproof covering, RESITRIX® also provided a robust roof covering able to withstand the weight of the solar PV as well as foot traffic from maintenance teams.
