Structural Waterproofing Solutions
Our systems include integral protection and cavity drain methods for internal structures, such as basement car parks.
They also support external uses, including ponds and balconies. Explore the structural waterproofing solutions available from CARLISLE®.
Types of Structural Waterproofing
Understanding the types of waterproofing available is essential to specifying the right system. BS 8102:2022 sets out three categories of structural waterproofing, each relying on different methods and materials to keep water out.
Type A — Barrier Protection
The most widely specified approach. A continuous waterproofing membrane is applied to the internal or external face of the structure to form a physical barrier.
CARLISLE® offers multiple options in this category. These include EPDM synthetic rubber, cold-applied liquid polyurethane (PU), and TPO single-ply sheet. Each option fits different uses and budgets.
Type B — Structurally Integral Protection
With Type B integral protection, water resistance is built into the structural concrete. This is done using admixtures or a carefully controlled mix design. Primarily used for new below-ground structures and earth-retaining walls, Type B integral protection is rarely sufficient on its own. Most effective when combined with Type A or Type C drained protection.
Type C — Drained Cavity Protection
Instead of preventing water ingress, Type C systems are designed to manage and control it. A dimple-profile cavity drain membrane creates a drainage gap at the internal face of the structure, directing any water that enters to a sump pump for removal. This is the preferred structural waterproofing solution for retrofit basements where external excavation is not possible.
Why Choose Structural Waterproofing?
Structural waterproofing is a long-term investment in a building's integrity, and getting the specification right from the outset avoids costly remedial works later. CARLISLE® waterproofing systems offer:
Life expectancy of 50+ years — our membranes are certified to outlast multiple refurbishment cycles
BS 8102:2022 compliance — all systems and installation guidance align with the current British Standard
Sustainability credentials — from HERTALAN®'s recyclability to SURE-WELD® TPO's solar-reflective surface
Expert technical support — from system selection through to post-installation inspection
