The Project
A robust waterproofing solution was required to support long-term building performance and achieve the goal of meeting the Ministry of Defence’s DREAM (Defence Related Environmental Assessment Methodology) Excellent rating. HERTALAN® EPDM was selected for its durability, flexibility and root-resistant suitability for a green roof build-up.
The 850m² roof, including 515m² of green roof, was completed using a made-to-measure 1.2mm HERTALAN® EPDM membrane. Prefabrication reduced on-site seams and enabled rapid installation, with the membrane pulled into place in a single operation to quickly achieve a watertight structure.
The membrane was mechanically fixed using the CARLISLE® Induction System, which bonds the membrane to coated plates using electromagnetic technology. This eliminates the need for adhesives and avoids penetrations through the waterproofing layer, supporting both performance and future recyclability.
The HERTALAN® EPDM system also provided flexibility for detailing. Openings for rooflights and upstands were formed in situ, while seams and details were completed using hot air welded cover strips, avoiding the use of naked flames.
