CARLISLE brings architects together for knowledge sharing at the Tate
CARLISLE® Construction Materials welcomed more than 40 architects and specifiers to one of London’s most celebrated contemporary buildings on 30 November 2023, for a ‘Future of Building Envelopes: Exploring Innovation and Sustainability through Case Studies’ event at Tate Modern. The event is part of ‘Experience Carlisle’ events in Germany and Holland throughout 2023.
Hosting the event in association with Building Magazine, we curated presentations from three visionary projects highlighting creative new approaches to building envelope specification, leveraging advanced building product systems to optimise sustainability, performance and buildability.
Tim Gledstone, partner at Squire & Partners, showcased how architects push the boundaries of skyscraper design by exploring the possibilities of building envelopes. Illustrating his talk with an in-depth case study of Triptych Bankside, he explained the approach to the project’s pioneering facades, dynamic lighting systems, fire resistance and waterproofing systems, highlighting the use of innovative materials to deliver buildings that redefine modern cityscapes.
A key knowledge-sharing focus at the event was green roofs, which are gaining popularity in the UK as specifiers seek to create liveable cities with biophilia and to reduce the impact of high-density development with green roofs’ natural drainage. Delegates were invited to explore the varied roofing and facade technologies required to create exceptional green roofs, using the Carlisle Construction Materials Macallan Distillery case study as an example. Toby Jeavons, associate partner at RSHP, led a discussion on the topic, sharing insights into the design and specification decisions required for a successful green roof.
Delegates gained insights into key green roof topics, including waterproofing systems, drainage options, and potential sustainability benefits, such as thermal enhancements for the building. The session provided a wider understanding of both the benefits of green roofs and the factors involved in designing and building them.
Finally, delegates were able to learn about the impact of innovative building envelopes on publicly accessible buildings with Sheldon Walsh, partner at Ryder Architecture. Sharing a case study about the National Rehabilitation Centre, he showcased how architects and designers create environments prioritising user wellbeing, natural light, and energy efficiency. This provided useful pointers for making specification decisions that improve the safety and sustainability of publicly accessible buildings.
Shail Chauhan, UK marketing manager at Carlisle Construction Materials commented: “With so many experienced professionals in the room, the event was a great opportunity to share experience and build on technical knowledge and understanding of the latest innovations in the sector. The event showcased a variety of innovative building envelope systems including CARLISLE’s waterproofing, and ARBO's airtight and fire-resistant solutions that are reshaping the way we think about architecture, safety and sustainability. “
