“HERTALAN® EPDM –
for particular challenges”
Project manager for roof waterproofing work on Rotterdam’s main train station
Why did you choose HERTALAN® EPDM for this project?
The guttering manufacturer commissioned us with the sealing of the steel gullies, which spanned a total of three kilometres. We thought about the most efficient way to carry out this job, and we came up with the idea of using a prefabricated, 3D EPDM cladding for the gullies. So we spoke to Carlisle CM Europe to ask if they were able to manufacture anything like that. After all, they are the specialists in EPDM with over 50 years of experience. Thanks to their flexible production methods and short communication pathways, they were very quickly able to produce and supply the 3D moulded parts we wanted.
What particular challenge did this project present for you?
During the construction phase, the trains still had to be able to arrive and depart with as little disruption as possible. Safety was a major issue, and we had to comply with a huge number of safety regulations. For example, we weren’t allowed to wear green helmets so that we didn’t risk the train driver thinking one of them was a green signal.
We also had a very tight schedule, so the prefabricated elements for sealing the gullies really helped us. And last but not least, the seal had to be bonded into the gullies with ideally no tension. HERTALAN® EPDM is permanently elastic and remains extremely ductile for decades, however it was difficult to predict how the gullies would behave. Would they sag after installation? We tried to exclude such risks as far as we possibly could.
How were the prefabricated roof gullies fixed to the roof?
Using a crane. Otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we did within an economically viable timeframe, nor would we have been able to keep to the tight deadline.
How long did you need to seal and install the roof gullies?
We sealed five of the 25-metre-long gullies a day, so 125 metres. So, for the total of three kilometres of roof gullies, we needed 24 days.
