Forest Pavilion, Horticultural Show, Schwäbisch Gmünd

Teaching and research at the Institute for Computational Design (ICD) at the University of Stuttgart focus on computer-based design processes and digital production methods in architecture and is a leading institution in its field. One of its projects, the ICD / ITKE research pavilion forming part of the Schwäbisch Gmünd Horticultural Show in 2014, is based on the robot-guided production of three-dimensional tongue and groove joints and their use in the context of an innovative timber shell construction and the use of a water jet cutter on our RESITRIX® sealing membranes.

For the timber construction, a computer was used to create 243 individual elements which create the overall construction using robot-guided milled tongue and groove joints, put together like a 3D puzzle. To protect the skin of the roof and as a water-deflecting layer, RESITRIX SK W Full Bond was attached to each wood fibre insulation board with a 6 cm overlap on all sides directly during the pre-production stage. The joints were then welded on the construction site.
